As many of you know, I've been struggling through the process of applying to jobs. I have a dual degree in History and Chinese and tons of skills that are not Accounting or Finance. This has been more of a burden than I thought it would be.
Today, as I was applying to a job, I was asked 121 questions about how I feel about lying, cheating, leadership, problem-solving, energy levels and tardiness. I was also asked a particular question which I thought was particularly difficult to [Agree or Disagree] with.
Think about this one:
101. You would like to see people you dislike receive the consequences they deserve.
Agree or Disagree?
The obvious answer is Agree. But then you remember this is a job application survey. What kind of question is this for a job application survey anyway?
You would like to see the people you dislike receive the consequences they deserve? There are so many things wrong with this statement. First of all, by agreeing, you are agreeing that you are human and will eventually work with people that you dislike. This is strange, since I'm pretty sure I'm superhuman and if I disliked anyone, I would try not to spend my time worrying about the outcome of their lives.
Let's think about this again. You would like to see the people you dislike receive the consequences they deserve. They deserve? This is also quite foreboding as this sets you up to think that you are in the position to understand what exactly they deserve. As though you would be willing to commit actions to put them in their PLACE.
Ruh roh. The obvious correct answer is disagree. Not just because the correct answer isn't agree. Here's why: The statement is "You would like to see the people you dislike receive the consequences they deserve." I believe this is fundamentally different that "You would feel good about people you dislike receiving the consequences they deserve."
One is before anything were to occur, signaling your willingness to support their demise, while the second statement, I think, is the better of the two, with a more natural human outcome. Experiencing a little schadenfreude never hurt anyone.
I would indeed feel quite delighted at the demise of a nemesis, but I would rather not dirty my hands in it. My belief is that if they are not smart enough to not bring about their own demise, then what is so wrong for me to relish for a second in one that I dislike's downfall.
Do you agree or disagree with the question/my reasoning? Obviously, my critical deep thinking should get me this job. Most likely, it won't. Sighhh.
